As well as home based physiotherapy, we also offer home based orthopaedic elderly care. Let’s dive deeper into what orthopaedics is and why it could be helpful for you or a loved one.
What is orthopaedics?
Orthopaedics is a branch of medicine that focuses on the care of the skeletal system and its interconnecting parts. This includes bones, ligaments, muscles and tendons. It is often used to treat/prevent pain and injury. Orthopaedists treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions. This includes:
-
Joint pain
-
Soft tissue injuries (muscles, tendons and ligaments)
-
Back and neck pain
-
Shoulder pain
-
Carpal tunnel syndrome
-
Sports injuries
-
Knee pain
-
Hip pain
Not sure whether you need an orthopaedist or a physiotherapist? No worries. In your initial consultation, we will assess your issues and advise on what treatment you should be receiving. Usually, orthopaedists are used for pre or post surgery treatments.
What are the benefits of physiotherapy?
At The Well Balanced Centre, the aim with our orthopaedic care treatment is to:
-
Assess patients pre-surgery to identify and treat issues. This will then maximise pre-surgical function
-
Provide effective treatment to aid early mobilisation
-
Minimise pain and discomfort before and after surgery
-
Tailor your rehabilitation so it suits you and your goals
-
Prevent subsequent falls and fractures
What will my physiotherapy treatment include?
This is a frequently asked question and the answer is actually different for everyone. We tailor our care to your needs. This means that not everyone’s treatment will look the same. However, a typical treatment will include:
-
A tailored home exercise programme for you to do outside of the sessions
-
Assisted functional activity practice. This could be something like walking up stairs or getting up from your chair
-
Balance work
-
Indoor and outdoor mobility practice
-
Hazard spotting and assessment of mobility aids
-
Hands-on techniques to reduce immediate pain
What will happen in my initial assessment?
Our care specialists will chat to you about a number of things in your initial assessment. One of the things they will establish is what goals you are looking to achieve. It’s a good idea to set yourself a larger goal and then some smaller ones. A larger goal could be walking up the stairs with a handrail. A smaller goal could be safely getting up and down from your chair. Everyone’s goals will be different.
By establishing your goals, we can tailor your treatment plan to help you reach them. It’s important to set those smaller goals too. They allow you to track your progress and see how far you’ve come.
In your initial assessment, we will also point out hazards and suggest mobility aids to help prevent future falls. We can also provide a small amount of hands-on care to remove immediate pain.
