What Is Orthopaedic Physiotherapy?

Orthopaedic physiotherapy is a specialised field focused on diagnosing, treating and managing conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system including bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Its primary aim is to restore mobility, reduce pain and improve physical function.

This type of physiotherapy plays a key role in post-surgical rehabilitation.

For individuals living with chronic issues like arthritis, back or neck pain, orthopaedic physiotherapy offers strategies to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Who can benefit?

Orthopaedic physiotherapy is a specialised service that supports older adults in managing pain, improving mobility and recovering from musculoskeletal conditions or surgery.

Our tailored physiotherapy programmes are designed to restore movement, build strength and enhance your overall quality of life.

1

Older adults recovering from orthopaedic surgeries, such as knee or hip replacements

2

The elderly managing chronic conditions like arthritis or persistent back pain

What does a physiotherapy assessment involve?

We conduct a thorough and personalised assessment aimed at understanding your physical abilities, challenges and safety within your home or living environment.

It typically includes reviewing your medical history, observing movement, assessing strength, balance and mobility and checking for home safety risks.

The goal is to create a tailored treatment plan that promotes independence, reduces the risk of falls, manages pain, and enhances overall quality of life.

Frequently asked questions

Lizzi and Patient - Well Balanced Centre - Elderly Physiotherapy

Yes. Orthopaedic physiotherapy is tailored to each individual’s age, condition and physical ability. Therapists use safe, evidence-based techniques to help older adults improve mobility, reduce pain and recover from surgery or injury without putting them at risk.

The timeline varies depending on the condition and individual. Some patients notice improvements within a few sessions while others, especially those recovering from surgery or managing chronic conditions may need several weeks to experience significant progress.

In some cases, yes. For conditions like arthritis or chronic joint pain, physiotherapy can strengthen muscles, improve joint function and reduce pain, sometimes helping patients delay or avoid the need for surgery altogether.

We cannot fault Lizzi for her professionalism, empathy and kindness. She worked with our 90 year old dad after a fall and fractured hip. She has a wonderful way with the older patient and engaged with dad from the start. She managed to get him to do his exercises and walking with his frame and he was motivated to improve before the next visit.
Thank you.

Thank you Lizzi. You were great. You had me
moving and taught me about the importance of balance and how to improve that. I now have useful practical tips and ideas to continue improving my movement and balance going forward. You were encouraging and professional. I would wholeheartedly recommend you to others.

Lizzie was so brilliant following my father’s hip replacement. She was knowledgeable, encouraging and professional. He was so under-confident after the surgery and frightened of losing his balance and falling but after working with Lizzie for 8 months he was back to his baseline ( probably actually better than baseline!).
We’re so grateful.

Lizzi has worked miracles getting my dad (86) walking again after a fall and subsequent hip replacement operation. When he came home from hospital in late July he couldn’t stand, walk, get into bed or do anything without two people to help. We were pretty desperate for some help and hope and then we found Lizzi. Three months later, he is walking without pain all on his own without any aids, better than he was before his fall. Lizzi has been so kind, patient and encouraging with my dad. She has also been a brilliant support to me and my mum in the more difficult moments.
I would recommend her without a moments hesitation. Janet Gange

At 78 yrs age after a serious cycle accident I was discharged in May '25 from Princess Royal Hospital 2 weeks following a femur spiral fracture operation and 4 weeks from the accident being abroad.
I was recommended post surgery physio treatment and fortunately contacted The Well Balanced Centre.
Now 6 months on, I cannot stress enough the importance of having Lizzi from Well Balanced Centre in weekly attendance.
With her support and encouragement the goal became much clearer both pyhisically and mentally. Daily exercises were both enjoyable, rewarding and confident restoring. I will certainly continue with Lizzi's services until I feel fully recovered. In addition Lizzi has been most helpful in chasing follow up appointments. Meanwhile I am back dog walking, cycling, travelling abroad and boat servicing in preparation for next year !

Lizzi at The Well Balanced Centre has treated both my elderly parents, showing great kindness and respect while providing expert physio and tailored exercises to help them regain strength, balance and confidence following falls. She was able to treat them both at home and in a care home setting, saving the discomfort of transportation when in an infirm state.

Lizzi is an excellent physio and really good at communicating clearly and effectively with elderly patients with hearing and cognitive difficulties. I would highly recommend her.

Really grateful to Lizzi for the physio she provided at home for my Dad who was struggling with his strength and balance. As well as easy to follow exercises to improve strength, Lizzi also provided practical guidance on how to move safely around the house and what to do in the event of a fall. My Dad always looked forward to Lizzi's visits and would tell me how good she was. Lizzi also kept in close contact with me which I very much appreciated. Worth every penny. Thank you Lizzi 🙂

My father had a long stay in hospital in 2022, which left him unable to walk unaided. Lizzi came to work with him and her visits quickly became the highlight of his week. With great skill, kindness and unfailing humour she encouraged and enabled him to stand, then walk short distances. This gave him hope of a return to some mobility, which was so important to him. She brightened his life and became a friend to us all. My family and I absolutely recommend her. Thank you Lizzi.

What a wonderful company -my husband has vascular dementia and is extremely unbalanced while walking. Lizzi answered my initial enquiry within the hour and Jason has been visiting him regularly. His walking and general stability has improved and importantly, he's feeling much more positive. Jason is extremely kind and attentive and my husband listens and remembers his advice. Jason is very good at motivating my husband to keep moving & exercising and he's a skilled and dedicated physio. Highly recommend this company.

Since my husband had his very severe stroke 18 months ago, Lizzi and her team have been amazing, both physiotherapists Tom and Jason have assisted Garry in his journey to recovery. Attentive and dedicated they have helped give him back his confidence and more Mobility than we could have ever hoped for. Cannot recommend highly enough

Lizzi played a very important role in my wife’s rehabilitation from residential care and returning home again. She first saw my wife at St Clare’s Care Home during the depths of her depression, from which it was difficult to imagine she would ever recover. In combination with the excellent care from St Clare’s staff and the Linwood Community team, Lizzi encouraged and aided my wife’s physical fitness that, in turn, encouraged her mental wellbeing.
We thoroughly recommend Lizzi as an empathetic, skilful physiotherapist and would have no hesitation in calling on her services again.

I organised physio for my Mum following a fall which affected her mobility in her legs but she hadn't broken it. From the very outset I was so impressed, the advice Lizzie gave me was so incredibly useful even before making an initial consultation. I was able to get an appointment just a few working days later. My Mum found Jason to be so kind, professional and respectful, her mobility was getting worse each day so urgent help was needed. At the second visit I had a call from Jason as he was concerned something else may be going on to impact her mobility further. Sadly there were other issues affecting her health internally and a few days later my Mum sadly passed away after going to hospital. I have had lovely messages from Jason and Lizzie since. I can't recommend The Well Balanced Centre highly enough. There are few companies these days that really genuinely care and go out their way. Thank you so much.

POSTED ON BEHALF OF A CLIENT:
After a 7 week stay in hospital, my Mum who has advanced dementia, sadly lost the ability to walk. Upon discharge we had to move her into a Nursing home but were determined to do everything we could to rehabilitate her and give her back quality of life. Lizzi came to us highly recommended and right from day 1 she made such a positive impact. She engaged Mum with sensitivity, patience and kindness and also showed a demonstrable understanding of dementia and quickly built a rapport with not only Mum but us as a family - involving us in her treatment sessions. For a couple of sessions she also brought her colleague, Jason, to support in some stand-aid activities and every step of the way, consulted us and discussed options and the practical realities and constraints of a patient with dementia. A true professional, it was a pleasure to work with Lizzi and we are very grateful for the support she gave us.
